Instructions for Acquiring the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes (Foot Care) Credential - CFts
Recently, the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) launched a new credential for individuals providing therapeutic shoes and fitting services.
According to the specific scope of practice, the ABC Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes is “An individual trained and qualified in the provision of non-custom therapeutic shoes and non-custom diabetic multi-density inserts. A certified fitter of therapeutic shoes is competent to practice within the scope of non-custom therapeutic footwear only.”
To become an ABC Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes (CFts), individuals must prove their competency by submitting evidence of professional education and on the job experience including supervisory attestation confirming the candidate has completed five hundred (500) hours patient contact performing duties and responsibilities associated with therapeutic footwear.
This therapeutic foot care course purposely meets ABC professional education requirements to acquire the new credential and satisfies mandatory continuing education requirements to maintain additional ABC credentials. Please ask your course instructor for details. The course was developed through a teaming arrangement between Aetrex Worldwide Inc. and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA). There are two (2) portions to the program. A live (“hands on”) portion conducted by Aetrex Worldwide Inc. and an online (“home study”) component accessed through the NCPA web portal. Both portions MUST be successfully concluded to acquire a “Certificate of Course Completion” that can be submitted to ABC as evidence of professional competency. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT COURSE PARTICIPANTS COMPLETE THE “ONLINE” PORTION OF COURSE BEFORE REGISTERING TO COMPLETE THE “LIVE” PORTION.
